So you want to save some money?

I have been consulting on AWS and Web Application Architecture for quite some time now and oftentimes I come across businesses pitching my clients that say they can save them 75% on their AWS bill. That sounds like a pretty sweet deal in theory. So what is the catch? The number one thing I have heard from businesses like these is to sign long term contracts with AWS that commit you to spend thousands of dollars in order to get these discounts. Now if you know the future and you are confident your business's financial future is going to be as good, if not better than it is today, then great!

But what if the future is uncertain? What if it looked like there could be storm clouds on the horizon? Does it make sense to get locked into long term contracts that obligate you to spend money you might need to allocate somewhere else to survive? Wouldn't it be nice to have other options?

I by no means am saying do not take advantage of the discounts they offer for long term commitments if you feel comfortable committing to them. Please do.

Before you do that, I am offering 20+ other ways you can cut costs before you even decide what the baseline expenditure you want to commit to is. And all 20+ things can be done without long term commitments. It is your decision, you are in control. I am just here to shine some light on some tools, tricks and tactics that you might not be aware of before you make any big decisions.
